Reasons for trip

A stopover port on our short SAGA ‘Holland in Bloom’ cruise was Wijk bij Duurstede – a beautiful little town on the banks of the Rhine and one of the oldest settlement in the Netherlands. We approached along the river in late afternoon sunshine to be greeted by the wonderful windmill that is apparently the only one in the world that you can drive through. Nestled beside the small port filled with boats we could hardly wait to jump off and explore before dinner. Obviously the windmill was the first stop but we decided to carry on through the town and were thrilled with the small shops and restaurants and attractive narrow streets and wished we had more time to investigate. We continued on through the town and found the 13th century medieval castle with its surrounding moat but by then we had to dash back to the ship. Definitely a place that deserved a longer visit. I am sure that some passengers enjoyed the walk next morning but we had booked to go to Keukenhof Garden and were whisked away very early and eventually rejoined the ship at Amsterdam that evening. Thank goodness we had rushed around that evening and not missed the views attached.
