Having spent an enjoyable few days on the east coast we arrived in the historic town of Whitby on the 31st October Halloween. We got there late afternoon just in time for an incredible view of the coast line and a lovely sunset.
those familiar with the area will know about the 100 or so steps down from the abbey to the brilliantly atmospheric town below the thought of the climb back was a bit daunting but it was well worth it.
Whitby will be forever associated with Count Dracula and around Halloween time hundreds of Goths descend on the town in their fascinating and sometimes bizarre costumes and they are models for thousands of photographs. The shops and eateries are also be swathed with unearthly finery all making for a very interesting atmosphere.
After an hour or two strolling around the the town itself we made the breathless return up the steps to the abbey which was now lit up and looked beautiful in the darkness. The abbey managed by British heritage who light up the abbey every year at the same time. As well as the great photo opportunities there are ghost and folklore stories culminating of course with tales of Dracula. We spent a lovely evening in the area and would recommend it to anyone at any time of year but especially Halloween
