Our 3-night stay here as part of our South African tour was somewhat coloured by the changeable weather we experienced there. We commented to ourselves more than once that it is undoubtedly an excellent hotel in all respects when the weather is hot and sunny. In October, springtime in South Africa, it’s not always so…
The rooms are spacious and all offer a private balcony with superb views over the bay and the mountains in the distance. We did find them a little cold in the cooler, wetter weather we experienced, however, and needed to make full use of the heater provided.
It was inconvenient that it is necessary to walk outside to both the reception area (which doubles as the bar), and the restaurant, especially when pouring with rain! Further, the hotel wi-fi is only available in the reception, so keeping in touch with home was not very convenient. Had the weather been kinder to us, these aspects would have been less of an issue.
We enjoyed our our breakfasts and evening meals in the restaurant, and the service there was good, but we did experience a bit of noise late at night from a local club not far from the hotel. It was reassuring (or worrying, depending on your point of view!), that the hotel grounds were secured by a high wire fence with electrification – part of life in this country, it seems.
The best aspect of the hotel, from our experience of it, was its situation for visiting the eastern end of the Garden Route. Trips to the Tsitsikamma National Park, Storms River Mouth, the Elephant Sanctuary (where we walked with and fed the elephants!), and on the Keurbooms River were all memorable and we were very happy that the inclement weather didn’t prevent us from doing everything we wanted in this part of the country.
