Reasons for trip

Went on coach tour with limits of time so brief visit to Bishops Palace. I believe free tours are available but I went to see the gardens which in June are superb. With the setting of the ruined great hall and many superb old trees. The bedding is the best seen outside Chelsea! There appears to be a picnic area in the garden area with tables and chairs. Time being pressing I then went to the cathedral to see various interesting items recommended to me. The west front is splendid, built in 1300s in the glorious local stone and covered with sculpted figures and scenes. I headed to see the beautiful old clock which chimes at the quarters and waited to see the knights jousting round. There are free guides but do look for those that wear a blue sash and are there to answer your questions as you make your own way round. A very pleasant knowledgeable man showed me a carved spoonbill catching a frog for which you did need a flashlight! I was looking for the old door leading to the old steps. These were the steps leading to the Chapter House and had been worn right down by the clergy over many years, you will notice the scissor arches. These were used to strengthen over sinking foundations and are very elegant. There is much more but I had just enough time to see the medieval street , Vicars Close, outside the north door.

I would have spent all day there but was not a free agent. .coach was waiting.

Open 7am to 7pm in summer and 6pm in winter – really long hours. Entrance is free but they do ask for a donation of £6, worth much more than that. It is large, do pick up a map at the entrance. There is a cafe, toilets and a shop.
