A lovely, compact city with a mess of a one-way system! It’s worth driving up to Mount Victoria for the spectacular views. Also worth doing the Cable Car, both for the novelty value and the views from the top. You can walk down but it is very steep and my husband (with his stick) couldn’t manage it so we didn’t do the Botanic Garden either.
Also in Wellington is the Te Papa Museum – free entry – we spent the best part of a day there, stopping to eat lunch in their cafe (also wifi there). Really well organised museum, very informative and interesting history of the Maori culture. A shame to spend a warm, sunny day indoors but it was worth it!
Take time to stroll along the water’s edge too, lots of quirky pop-up shops with lovely (not expensive) items on sale.
A nice city, and close to the airport too, which suited us.
Wellington Airport aka Middle Earth is small but efficient. Don’t worry about packing your liquids – we had a bottle of wine and they waved us through!
