Relaxation

We love this hotel and have stayed there for many “spur of the moment” short winter/spring breaks over the past few years, when we have been desperate for a burst of sunshine and some R & R. As independent travellers we check the long range weather forecast for Golf del Sur on Zoover.co.uk, find the cheapest flights on SkyScanner.com and best room rate onTravelRepublic.co.uk or Onthebeach.co.uk then e-mail the hotel management direct, who have always matched the best current room rates, to make a reservation. All upper floor rooms have splendid sea views and balconies. However, there is a flight of stairs to climb to reach the lift so wheelchair users are restricted to ground floor rooms. They are generous in offering upgrades when available.

So, why do we keep coming back:

Convenience – after a ten minute 15 Euro taxi ride from the airport and a warm welcome from the reception staff, we are on the balcony or sun deck enjoying the sea views, cool drink in hand.

Location – set directly on the seafront overlooking the Atlantic with the charming fishing village of Los Abrigos to one side, it is close to the San Blas Square with a local supermarket selling a range of food, drink, newspapers, books and magazines; and numerous bars and restaurants with wonderfully cheesy evening entertainers crooning songs from the 60s and 70s.

Friendly staff – reception, restaurant, entertainment, cleaning and maintenance staff are all cheerful and helpful. Any issues are dealt with promptly. Reception will always call for bar staff if the bar is unmanned during the day.

Excellent accommodation – spacious, bright and airy rooms, with fabulous sea views, good soundproofing; fridge large enough to hold large bottles of water purchased from the Supermercado across the road, spacious free safe operated by swiping a credit card (we take along an out of date one) and big enough to hold a mini lap top as well as Kindle, phones, wallets etc; and a full size, professional hairdryer. Bath and beach towels are plentiful and good quality.

Plentiful sun beds – on two levels of decking, with romantic double bed lounges on the peaceful upper sun deck away from the pool area.

Bountiful breakfasts – the highlight of our day is enjoying breakfast on the outside terrace in the sunshine (especially in winter months): fresh fruits, yoghurts, cereal, breads, pastries, cold meats, freshly brewed coffee. Although there is no egg station or pancake making area (which some guests seem to expect as standard these days) there is a hot buffet which is replenished regularly.

Vicinity/eating out – we always choose bed and breakfast so we can enjoy the various restaurants within walking distance and help boost the local economy, (and enjoy the free liquor shots that often come with the bill – vodka caramel and honey rum are the current favourites). A wonderful British-run tea room, Hattie’s, has recently opened up opposite the hotel providing tasty lunches and morning coffees/afternoon teas with tempting home-made cakes. Adjacent the hotel is Taboos Goes Italian a restaurant/night club which provides excellent value meals and live entertainment. Further up the San Blas Square, is our favourite Indian restaurant, Hawellis (3 courses for c. £10.00 each); and further round the corner is Bar Electra for delicious, classy meals cooked to order by the owner/chef, Paulo, in the tiniest of kitchens (reservation advised). A 10-15 minute walk across the beach leads to the quaint fishing village of Los Abrigos, where you will find, Los Roques – a sophisticated, harbour side, Michelin-rated restaurant. Visit their web site restaurantelosroques.com to view their latest menu, including two tasting menus, and make a reservation to be sure of a table. There is also a number of traditional fish and paella restaurants serving the day’s catch.

A short walk along the coastal path in the other direction from the hotel is El Nautico bar, a fantastic sea front setting, serving tapas and sangria in the early evening. Further along towards the Santa Barbara complex, if you are sure footed enough to tackle the slippery unmade path, is another run of sea front restaurants including a Japanese with an entertaining Teppanyaki bar.

Activities – the hotel runs pilates several mornings a week and the indoor gym is small but well equipped with fantastic views and long opening hours. I have seen notices for evening entertainment – music, snakes, birds of prey – but we have not remained in the hotel at night to experience any of these. There are super coastal walks/runs from the hotel. The hotel can arrange car hire and tours of this beautiful Island can also be organised. The Golf del Sur region is not typical of the rest of the Island and on previous visits we have toured the Botanical Gardens; visited the volcanic park surrounding El Teide; admired the famous dragon tree of Icod and walked along stunning ravines. Los Christianos and Las Americas are a short bus ride away if you want more exciting night life.

Other guests – The hotel mainly attracts a sophisticated, European clientele – couples of all ages and some families with well-behaved children – and Airline Crew.

The weather – although we have experienced some serious rain storms in February, we have always enjoyed plenty of warm sunny days, especially in the New Year when we often go there to relax after Christmas, celebrate my birthday and experience New Year’s Eve Spanish style!

There have been criticisms of the hotel on Trip Advisor, especially about the pool area decking looking tired and flaking paint on the exterior walls, so we were pleased to note the hotel closed in June for refurbishment of this area. We just hope they don't hike up their prices! One recent reviewer complained about the noise of the waves keeping them awake at night.
