My first visit to Madeira and its wonderful mountain region. Long and windy roads take you to many stunning viewpoints.
Our first was Eira do Serrado – a viewpoint at 1000 meters and overlooking the Nun Valley. We had a beer in the village below.
Then we visited Balcões. A short footpath through woods leads to a wide balcony with wonderful views over the Faial Valley.
The best was the long drive to Pico do Areeiro with its observatory. From here you can walk to highest point of Madeira, Pico Ruivo at an altitude of 1862 meters. This is a remarkable view above the cloud cover. There is a cafe and shop here too.
All these are free to access though parking is difficult in some.
