Reasons for trip

Ideally situated in the centre of Salcombe with parking opposite in the town car park @ £2 per night. There are only two rooms, called The Hobbit because the door entry is low. The room is perfectly adequate & for £75 per night for a room, it is excellent value. Only a glimpse of a sea view but the room is clean, has a tv, hairdryer & ensuite shower room. It could be a bit noisy in the summer as there is a large Terrace garden with an extensive play area for children.

The main reason for going is the local fresh food. It has recently won Taste of the West prestigious No 1 Place to Go Award – beating literally hundred of other establishments in a list that included restaurants as well as pubs.

We chose the Mussels in a white wine sauce & the Belly of Pork with fennel mash. Afterwards we shared a delicious blackberry & apple crumble with custard. There is a choice of house wines @ £19 per bottle & a good wine list.

The pub is very popular so booking essential. Afterwards stroll across to the
Customs House Quay & admire the Salcombe Lifeboat. There is plenty to do in the area & not only Boating. If you do stay a night, this Pub does not do breakfast but there is an excellent Beach cafe on North Sands called The Winking Prawn, a fun lively place, with the only Buffet breakfast in Salcombe. Great for Grandchildren with the beach opposite in this Cafe with a view. A good cliff walk is nearby on the south west coastal path near a very pretty National Trust garden at Overbecks overlooking the Estuary. Good for cream teas, hot chocolate etc. The walk goes out to Bolt Head with stunning sea views & along to Hope Cove. arguably one of the finest stretches of the entire coastal footpath. If the weather is food, there is nowhere better.
