Reasons for trip

It's over 40 years since I last visited here and it's just as awe-inspiring, with the best examples of seemingly everything! Walking past amazing classical sculptures into galleries representing different times or other cultures it's almost overwhelms one with beauty overload. The medieval section we found particularly fascinating. There's a gallery from where one looks down on the most enormous bits of ancient masonry (cathedral frontispieces, Roman columns etc) on one side and onto gigantic stone figures being restored, on the other. The tiny exquisite bits and pieces everywhere are wonderful and the jewellry is fantastically displayed in a very modern darkened but beautifully lit gallery. It showed the items in date order with the very oldest being surprisingly delicately made. There were lots of people squashed together looking at those exhibits, so obviously popular. I imagine that it could take weeks to look around all the museum but perhaps keeping plenty for future visits is a good idea. It's so wonderful that the London Museums are free still.
