Whenever we have visited Lake Garda we have taken the oportunity to book seats for the opera in Verona which is a’ not to be missed’ experience. The atmosphere before dark is always very lively with picnics and chatter but as soon as dusk falls everyone lights their little candles which is magical and silence falls for the performance. The sets are amazing – last year we saw Madame Butterfly and the performers and musicians were wonderful and the audience of mostly Italians where we sat were very appreciative. On a warm summer evening the arena was packed and I believe it holds up to 20,000 people. The tour companies in the area organise coaches and tickets so you are picked up from hotels and its is always well organised. If you can afford the seats these are more comfortable than sitting on the stone steps but for younger opera-goers this is part of the fun. I would recommend this experience to anyone visiting Lake Garda.
