The “Union Block Bakery”:http://www.unionblockbakery.ca is a new addition to the small town of Dresden, Ontario. Situated on the main thoroughfare through town on the corner of St. George Street (Highway 21) and Queen Street, the white building with black window frames stands out as somewhere worth checking out.
I’ve been in before to pick up some baking but the other day we went in for lunch. We booked ahead of time on their Facebook page but as it turned out there was plenty of room for those who just dropped in. The menu is small with just a sandwich and salad special each day but that doesn’t take away from the tastiness of the food. We shared a BLT (bacon, lettuce and tomato) on freshly baked focaccia bread and a Cobb salad. The BLT is probably the best one we’ve ever had – maybe it’s the addition of the aged cheddar cheese. The dressing for the salad was very creamy and delicious and the chicken was beautiful and tender. An added bonus is they source their ingredients locally as much as possible. When we ordered our lunch we also snagged the last lemon tart to share for dessert. I was a little wary as the crust was quite thick but no fear, it was like shortbread; melt in the mouth. The lemon was nicely tart. That’s one thing I like about their baked goods – they’re not too sweet. We took home a loaf of cheddar bread for good measure.
They post their daily specials on FB every morning. We’ll definitely be back whether to try something else or enjoy another BLT!
The bakery is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 9:30 to 5:00 but closes at 3:00 on Saturday. They take special orders if there’s something you want but don’t see in the display case, just give them a couple of days’ notice. We’ll be putting in an order for custard slices as they are difficult to find in the area.
