Once in a while, my partner Terry and I fancy a breakfast treat, so we picked a cold but sunny day and trekked over to Porthleven to sample the Twisted Currant Tearoom.
We discovered the venue by the simple method of Googling ‘breakfast in Porthleven’, and the Currant proved to be an excellent choice.
We rolled up at 10am sharp on a Sunday, and were first in – the place is cosy ie quite small, and getting in early looks to be a wise plan as the tables quickly filled up. The menu had a full and extensive choice of dishes from Something Sweet (waffles, porridge, teacakes) and Full English (including traditional, veggie and vegan), to breakfast baps and posh toast, and we settled for Bacon Posh Toast (crushed avocado, poached eggs and bacon) and a Toasted Teacake.
Local suppliers are favoured so the bacon and sausage were from Mounts Bay, bread by Baker Tom, eggs from Cornhill Farm, Tregothnan tea, and clotted cream from Roddas.
Our verdict: the Posh Toast was fab, a nice twist on the cooked breakfast staple; the service was friendly and welcoming; and a special touch was the dog treats for canine visitors.
The Currant is a little tucked away on Fore Street, just a short walk from the harbour, but it’s well worth searching out. And there’s an outside seating area tucked away round the back, for days when the weather’s warm enough to eat al fresco.
Our breakfast was fabulous, but it’s worth mentioning that the Currant also offers afternoon tea (pre-bookings only), cream teas, specials and soups, plus a good range of home-made cakes and cookies.
As if the breakfast wasn’t a good enough start to the day, we then spent a while wandering around the harbour, where the water was clear enough to watch a cormorant fishing under water, and then went for a walk along the paths of Highburrow: a fabulous morning.
In short, if you fancy a traditional cooked breakfast or one with a bit of a twist, this little tearoom has something for everyone. Highly recommended for great food, good service and a fabulous location.
