Reasons for trip

Next to Matalan and M&S on main street along the waterfront, Tony’s is only a small bar with tables outside overlooking Sliema ferries – OK, it is close to the road so there is always lots of traffic and a constant flow of pedestrians, but you still seem to have that Mediterranean feel.

The Maltese Platter is usually a good choice, although it was a bit more expensive at €14.50. We ordered an extra portion of chips (€2.50) as there was no bread listed on the menu only water biscuits – not our favourite. Well, as you can see from the photograph, this was a magnificent platter and no chips needed at all!

A wide range of meats, cheese and vegetables all beautifully presented. The bigilla – broad bean and garlic moist pate – is so tasty, and the peppered goats cheese was smooth and creamy. Maltese sausage full of flavour, as were the butter beans (which we tend not to include in salads so much, but which are common in many dishes in Malta) and sun-dried tomatoes.

With the chips as well, this was a great lunch-time feast complemented by a bottle of local red wine Pjazza Regina at € 9 (of course!). A perfect way to spend a warm, sunny day watching the world go by and, better still, just near the bus stops to get back to Bugibba or a ferry across to Valletta.
