Reasons for trip

Although the postal address is Hull, this is actually on the outskirts of Hull. It is well situated on the A164, themain road between the Humber Bridge and Beverley. It is ideally placed for anyone wanting a meal when visiting either Castle Hill Hospital or the Crematorium. You can’t miss the Toby Carvery as it is the very large building opposite the retail park in Willerby with Waitrose, Lidl and Aldi….

Inside it is a very large pleasant area with plenty of seating. It was 6pm and we hadn’t booked. We were wanting a table for eight and were given the choice of either waiting 45 minutes for a table or to eat in the bar area with tables pushed together. We chose the latter and were swiftly sorted and given menus. Most people don’t bother with the menu and opt for the carvery. With a choice of turkey, pork, gammon or beef we were no exception. The children quickly made their choices off the very comprehensive childrens menu.

The carvery was certainly generous with good sized helpings of meat. I’d chosen beef which was tender and with a good flavour. It came with one of the biggest individual Yorkshire puddings I’ve seen. I had to pile the veg perilously on top.

Even though the roast potatoes had just been brought out, they were a bit leathery, unlike the roast parsnip which was crispy and fluffy inside; delicious in fact. There were two choices of mash as well as scalloped potatoes and six different veg to choose from. As well as the usual carrots, peas, sprouts and cauliflower in a white sauce, there was red cabbage. There was even a choice of gravy to complement the meat as well as small dishes of sauces etc.

Service was quick and plates were hot. Serving staff were attentive and good.

For those feeling very hungry there is the King Sized option for an extra £1.50 which comes on an even bigger plate and includes two Yorkshire puddings as well as two sausages. I was struggling to finish my ‘ordinary’ size serving. I think my eyes had been larger than my stomach when it came to the veg…. It is just as well I hadn’t had a starter and I couldn’t manage a dessert.

The bar serves the usual selection of keg beers and lagers but there were also four hand pumps with real ale, which had the Cask Marque accreditation. There are self service pumps for those wanting coke or a mix of soft drinks.

This isn’t haute cuisine, but is an excellent place for anyone wanting a good cheap meal. They also do breakfast from 8-11am.
