Reasons for trip

McDonalds in Tindale Crescent, Bishop Auckland closed last month for a major refurbishment.

I am not what you would call a fan of this American Fast Food chain, but when it opened up again last week, we decided to brave the crush and treat the grandchildren to what they call a Happy Meal.

This consisted of about four chicken nuggets, a small bag of thin chips and a blackcurrant drink. Oh yes….and a plastic helicopter toy. I’m not sure what the kids fascination is about McDonalds. Is it the food or is it the toy?

I’m not keen on my grandkids getting a regular diet of fast food, and trust me they don’t, but Grandad is a bit of a softy, so I’m happy to take them now and again, if only to see the delight on their little faces.

Following it’s refurb, the place looked, clean, smart and full of flashing advertising screens and several screen games for the kids to play with. I was a bit confused with the ordering process, but one kind customer kept me right. You go to the left hand side of the counter to place your order and pay for it. They then give you a receipt with a number on it. You then move to the left of the counter and watch a screen above the counter like you do in Argos, and observe the progress of your order number. You collect your tray from the left side of the counter and push your way to the table that you managed to get after another bit of pushing and shoving earlier. It’s easy when you know how!

There were just as many grown ups tucking in to the various things on offer.

Grandma and me didn’t bother though, choosing to have a ham sandwich when we got home instead.
