Disappointed with our previously chosen pre-cruise hotels in Southampton, we selected a village pub with good reviews. We were well pleased with The White Lion.
The licensee emailed us in advance to warn us that Soberton Church Fete would be held on our arrival date in the field adjacent to the pub so parking might be difficult. On his advice we parked on Cutts Arch adjacent to the pub without any difficulty. Although the pub was understandably very busy we were welcomed and shown to our rooms. The rooms are in a converted stables and coach house block across the yard. Ours had a king size bed on the first floor with bath and sitting rooms below. They were tastefully decorated and spotlessly clean. The pub has Cask Marque accreditation, so beers and indeed all drinks were in excellent form and well presented. Dinner in the restaurant was of equal quality and portions were generous. Next time we shall skip the starters and go straight to the mains! After a good night’s sleep we enjoyed an excellent (and inclusive) breakfast. We had planned to buy a snack lunch. Instead we were offered and accepted free baguettes which had been prepared for the Fete and cling-filmed and stored in a fridge overnight – a pleasant surprise and easy to accept given the pub’s five star hygiene rating.
We shall certainly stay at The White Lion again.
