Reasons for trip

The Sun Inn near Wackerfield in County Durham has been a pub for around 300 years. It has a black and white Tudor look about it and sits on the side of the A688 between Barnard Castle and Bishop Auckland

Today, of course, it is unrecognisable from what it looked like in the 18th century.

I first crossed it’s door about 50 years ago, and it is even a lot different now from those swinging sixties years.

In those days it had a men only bar on the right hand side of the front door, and what was called “the snug” on the left. The only food it served was potato crisps and salted peanuts.

Today, after some extensive alterations and refurbishments it is a very comfortable pub lounge and restaurant.

The restaurant has a quite typical pub menu to suite most people and there is a large choice of ales, lagers and soft drinks. Prices are reasonable too.

Management and I went for our usual, battered Cod & Chips, which is served with peas and salad.

We knew from experience that the portions are large enough to satisfy the biggest appetites, so we gave a miss to the starters and decided there just wasn’t room for a sweet either.

Cod & Chips in this establishment is just £8.50 with all the trimmings, so satisfaction all round!
