Reasons for trip

We stayed at The Stag for a couple of nights midweek in November and it was great. We plan to return. The staff were all very cheerful, efficient and helpful. The building was an old 16th century coach house which used to be a jail house and court. Parts of the old building remain but it has been extensively altered over the centuries making it an attractive “rabbit warren” of interconnecting rooms and alcoves – excellent for a quiet drink or meal.

The building is on the main road but the bedrooms are at the back and we did not notice the traffic at all. Our room was No 1 and across a small courtyard. It had a small comfortable lounge (lighting could have been better) with bottles of water, a coffee machine and gluten free brownies – a nice touch. A spiral staircase led up to the bedroom and large bathroom. There was a comfortable brass bed and very low beams – well padded! We slept well and got used to walking about with our heads lowered. Breakfast was included and consisted of a “help yourself” selection of cereals, fruit, muffins etc and a menu for cooked items – including eggs Benedict, kippers and smoked salmon as well as the traditional “full English”. All very good.

We had evening meals both nights of our stay. It is an Old English Inn chain member and had their standard menu which is very comprehensive. I had the seafood risotto with sea bass and scallops which I enjoyed so much I repeated it the next night. My husband had hunters chicken one night and a curry the second – both of which he thoroughly enjoyed. Desserts were also good as was the beer. Service was friendly and swift both evenings. There are quite a lot of tables but these are spread out over many small interconnecting rooms so giving it a pleasant intimate feeling. There is also an outside eating area but this was not used in November though one group were sitting and drinking outside. Overall excellent though our room would not have been suitable for the disabled.
