Reasons for trip

Every time we went in and out of our Canterbury hotel, we passed “The Pound”:https://www.onepoundlane.co.uk/ which was situated right on the iconic West Gate and river bank. Although it was near a main road it was set back a little way and a row of outside tables were often in the sun.

We stopped for a very late lunch when we wanted a simple snack. The menu listed a number of “British small plates”:https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5a3bd2afa803bb32a9a7538e/t/5b06fdab562fa7f3b3656dc8/1527184811944/The+Pound+-+Small+Plates+Menu.pdf which we thought fitted the bill perfectly. We chose two to share: a pork pie with brown sauce and a trout scotch egg with dill mayonnaise. With a glass of wine, it was perfect. We went in to order from the bar, where the young man was extremely friendly and professional and insisted on carrying the glasses out for me.

Again, on our final day in the city, we wanted a light lunch before leaving and once again, The Pound didn’t disappoint. This time we had a glass of house white and a sparkling water and shared a cauliflower bhaji with a black quinoa salad and a goat’s cheese and pearl barley croquette with beetroot ketchup. Although it was a different team on shift, once again, the young man who served us was excellent and happy to carry our drinks out.

All the British plates were priced between £4 to £6.

Whilst we only had drinks and snacks, we’d be happy to return again for a full meal. The staff are all very helpful and so polite.

The building has lots of history and as it was formerly a police station, there are four cells which can be hired out for a private meal.
