Reasons for trip

The Peppermill is located in Kenyon Street, in the county town of Nenagh, Tipperary, Ireland. It was opened in June 2000 and is owned by Robert and Mairead Gill.

We were staying overnight in Abbeyview, a B&B just outside Nenagh and The Peppermill was one of the eating places recommended to us.

Fortunately, we were given alternative directions to access Kenyon Street as it was closed, being dug up for gas or similar utility works.

The street was like your typical Irish layout with lots of small, individual and interesting shops.

As we entered the Peppermill we found a Tapas Bar on the ground level and the restaurant was located up a flight of stairs. The decor was very nice and we were quickly shown a table. We were able to choose the Early Bird meal as it was 6pm.

The menu dishes included the best Irish and locally sourced produce and the service is very good, with a friendly atmosphere and pleasant background music.
Tipperary Hereford prime Beef is used and seafood is sourced from relations in Cork.

I chose the ‘Golden Fried Garlic Mushrooms’, oozing with garlic butter as the starter. which was very good. Then I had the ‘Slow cooked Pork Belly, golden fried black pudding scotch egg, creamy colcannon and juniper berry juice’ which was absolutely heavenly! The pork was so tender and delicious.

If I was to be ‘picky’ the only fault I could find was that the colcannon was slightly cold when presented.

There were lots of desserst to choose from, but one of the best was ‘Granny’s Bread and Butter Pudding with Creme Anglaise’ , again excellent.

The Early Bird menu is served Tue-Fri 5pm to 7pm and Sat-Sun 4pm to 6pm for anyone who may be interested.

There is a private dining room available which can accommodate up to 50 people for weddings, parties, family gatherings, hen nights etc..

Robert and Mairead Gill own The Peppermill and it appears that they have built up a large local following – no doubt, for their excellence.
We were told that one of the two head chefs (Karuna) was Malaysian and had been there since the start. Mairead, I believe, is the other main chef.

We had a great, enjoyable meal and would certainly recommend.

With no lift, only stairs, I did ask what happened if anyone disabled wanted to eat in the restaurant, as opposed to the Tapas Bar. I was assured this was not a problem and that a meal would be served on a table in the Tapas Bar if the situation arose. Nice to know.
