The Old Hall Bed and Breakfast, Ely, is by far the best bed and breakfast we have stayed in by a country mile. Staying in a 16th Century Jacobean Hall with its own private drive, large grounds and that was once the home of Oliver Cromwell’s mother is not something you do every weekend!
Owners Anthony and Alison made us feel comfortable and relaxed from the moment we arrived, and after being shown to our sumptuous room, we were offered afternoon tea and the most delicious homemade carrot cake in the large and spacious reception. We were also asked if we would like to take evening supper but had already made plans to eat in one of Ely’s fine restaurants. (The Boathouse or The Old Fire Engine House are recommended). We’re sure it would have been fantastic.
There are only two guestrooms so we felt completely at ease. Our fellow guests, another couple, joined us in the dining room for a truly splendid traditional Sunday breakfast. You can always tell the class of a full English breakfast for its lack of baked beans, and The Old Hall, Ely did not fail to disappoint! Sunday papers and an up-to-date weather check were also available.
And this is the common theme in everything we experienced. A calm ambience, exceptional decor and furnishings, attention to detail wherever you look and some really nice personal touches, like the modern art and the old school photos hanging on the walls. Classic traditions mixed harmoniously with the new; a large roll-top bath ‘v’ a double designer walk-in shower?… the choice is yours.
We can truly report nothing untoward and only the distant noise of occasional traffic from a nearby road reminded you that you are not completely hidden deep in Cambridgeshire country. That said, we felt isolated enough, but thankfully only less than a mile from the centre of historic Ely, with a magnificent view of the Cathedral.
Ely offers the perfect weekend; the glory of Ely Cathedral and the historic story of Oliver Cromwell. Fine wining and dining with picturesque riverside restaurants and pubs. And frequent short journey trains to Cambridge for even more history, culture and shopping. We’re glad we chose The Old Hall, Ely. It really made our weekend special.
