Reasons for trip

The Northumberland Arms stands on the main road, and overlooking the River Coquet in the charming Mid Northumbrian village of Felton. It is easily accessible as it is just one mile from the A1.

Built in 1820 as a Coaching Inn, today this generous sized stone building serves as a Bar serving Real Ale, a restaurant known for its quality meals served all day and its luxurious accommodation – it has 6 rooms for guests.

What I like about this venue is its flexibility (as well as its good quality meals). It serves food to non residents from 11am to 11pm. People can stop for a quick bar snack, or light bar lunch or have a full lunch or dinner in the restaurant. I also like its interesting menu and the fact it uses good quality locally produced ingredients (and Northumberland is well known for its superb food larder!) which are turned into lovely meals by its talented chefs

I have often found that when a restaurant serves food all day, especially Sunday lunch then the quality of the meal can be compromised, but this is certainly not the case at the Northumberland Arms where quality is firmly on the menu!!. This venue has managed to successfully combine quality with all day dining and a varied menu.

My visits to the Northumberland Arms have been frequent, but this review is on my most recent visit whiich was for Sunday Lunch.

We arrived around 1pm, we parked in the small private car park, opposite the hotel. Car parking is a bit limited here. Cars can be parked on the main road outside the hotel or in the small car park. Despite it being a busy time for Sunday Lunch we managed to get a car parking space in the car park.

We had made a reservation. Reservations are not necessary but I am pleased we had made one as the restaurant was quite full. Despite it being busy, staff acknowledged us immediately and took us to our table.

The restaurant is large and there is also a conservatory where people can eat. We were seated in the main restaurant which was all very rustic with a huge fireplace, lots of exposed stone, flagged floors, wooden tables, chairs and cabinets.

A three course Sunday Lunch costs £19.50 a head. The menu had some appealing starters, traditional main courses (roasts) and some tempting deserts.. As we were traveling to visit family and stopping at The Northumberland Arms for a break enroute, we did not really want a huge meal so opted for the main course at £11.95 each.

Despite it being busy, our order was taken quickly and the staff were pleasant. We both ordered Roast Topside of Northumbrian Beef.

Our meal was lovely. There was a very generous serving of meat and it certainly was quality as well as quantity!. It was very tasty full of flavour and tender. The gravy was superb, rich full of meaty flavour. A pot of horseradish sauce was also provided.

On the plate with the meat was a giant Yorkshire Pudding, crisp on the outside, softer inside and more than able to absorb the delicious gravy. Roast potatoes which too were full of flavour, they may have been “just potatoes” but they were a treat for the tastebuds.

The side of vegetables included cauliflower, carrots, broccoli, green beans, and sweetcorn. The vegetables had some bite, but certainly were not under cooked, They also had plenty of flavour.

The meal was filling and we were pleased we had only opted for one course, we were quite full after the one course.

As we were driving we drank soft drinks but I did notice a good wine list and of course Real Ale.

Children are very welcome here and there is a separate childrens menu. I also noticed high chairs for babies.

For those requiring Gluten Free meals, The Northumberland Arms offers Gluten Free Options, although imagine it would be wide to let them know in advance.

Vegetarians are catered for with Vegetarian Options available throughout the menus.

The bar welcomes well behaved dogs, though they cannot come into the main restaurant.

As I have some mobility issues I am always interested in facilities for disabled people. I did think that in the main restaurant the tables were rather close together so I am not sure how well wheelchair users would cope. However, the main restaurant is all ground floor as is the bar and conservatory. I noticed a step at the entrance. I was told that a ramp is available for wheelchairs. Access to the W.C’s involved a step although I was told that they did have a fully accessible disabled toilet near the entrance

The Northumberland Arms is ideally suited as a stop off for a relaxing meal whilst traveling on the A1 in Northumberland. It has a perfect.location, close to many attactions and pretty countryside and coastal villages as well as unspoilt beaches. Within easy driving distance are the market towns of Morpeth and Alnwick. Country villages such as Warkworth with its magnificent Castle and Rothbury known for Cragside House and gardens. Alnwick Castle, The Alnwick Garden, Howick Hall and gardens. Bamburgh and Alnmouth and the Holy Island of Lindisfarne. The city of Newcastle Upon Tyne is around a half an hours drive from The Northumberland Arms.
