Reasons for trip

If you live anywhere near Tavistock on the Devon/Cornwall border, and you enjoy quality eating experiences, you definitely need to try this one!

We got to know about it through various foodie magazines and adverts, so thought we’d give it a try for a special occasion – my wife’s birthday last December. We enjoyed a really excellent lunch so much that we booked to go back for my birthday in February, but this time for dinner and an overnight stay. Our second visit did not disappoint either!

Firstly, our accommodation was first class. There are three levels of room to choose from – we booked a ‘deluxe’ room in the new coach house, to the rear of the main house. It was luxurious, with a balcony offering a great view of the Tamar Valley. It was our misfortune, however, that on both our visits the weather was cloudy and wet, preventing us from enjoying the panorama at its best! For anyone with mobility problems, there are ground floor rooms with parking immediately outside, and with accessible bathrooms.

Our dining experience was on a different level completely to meals we would normally have in local pubs or restaurants, and the service was excellent. To begin with, they will personalise the menu if they know it’s a special occasion – a nice touch to make it seem the menu is just for you! While waiting for our starters, canapes were brought to accompany our aperitif, followed by a small soup course, which were both very tasty. Again, little unexpected additions which make the experience more memorable. It was so difficult to make choices from the menu. Everything sounded (and looked!) delicious, as indeed it was. My dinner started with monkfish ceviche, followed by veal, and a chocolate and orange assiette for dessert. My wife went for scallops, cod and a vanilla and yoghurt mousse. She is rarely able to finish her pudding – much to my further enjoyment! I’ll add a photo of the menu…

The whole dinner was outstanding, served and presented just like the posh dishes on Masterchef! We will definitely be returning on a future occasion, maybe when the weather is a bit better, not only to enjoy the views but to make the most of the walking opportunities in the area. I’d recommend staying over, not only so you can enjoy a glass or two of wine, but also to enjoy an equally delicious breakfast the next morning! There always seem to be special offers and events going on, so have a look at their website!
