Reasons for trip

I was given a voucher as a 60th birthday gift (thank you, dear children, what a great pressie!) and took my hubby, (my chauffeur and money carrier so it made sense!) for a stay with food on a Thursday. It was very easy to get to and had a sizeable car park with fields behind it. We had booked ‘the best room’ (room 6) at the back, overlooking farmland – a large size with a living area with settee, and shower room. Others can have a bath instead but a shower is best for me (no climbing in) or on the ground floor and some overlooking the courtyard. The room had tea/coffee making facilities and a minibar is available at a cost. Afternoon was spent on a visit to the nearby Raglan Castle and a big garden centre but Goytre wharf, sugar loaf mountain or Abergavenny are close too.

The bar area has a copper bar, leather settees ad industrial tables to sit at while we enjoyed pre dinner G&T, reasonably priced too. This area and the restaurant area was olde-worlde with tasteful brown furniture and beams with other areas beyond leading out to a seated courtyard. There were quite a few diners.

The menu was quite extensive with a good range of food, not pretentious in presentation and delicious. The portions were generous and cooked to perfection. The executive chef, Stephen Terry, sources the food locally. We were served reasonably quickly and the serving staff were thankfully not overbearing or over-attentive.

The voucher was £199 which included the stay and 3 courses off the menu and a cooked breakfast. Alcohol is not included. All in all, it was a very pleasant experience, good value and we shall certainly be going back soon.
