Reasons for trip

We had an absolutely delicious meal at “The Greenman Restaurant”:http://thegreenman.co/restaurant/ in Fownhope, Heredforshire on a recent stay at the “inn”:https://www.silvertraveladvisor.com/review?id=189136. We had booked our stay before leaving on a trip to Cornwall and decided to take two days to travel home. While we were away the inn e-mailed my aunt who had made the booking to see if we wanted to book dinner the night of our stay (a Friday) in the restaurant and we said yes. We’re glad we did.

The inn is a lovely historic building and the restaurant is full of beams, a wood stove and other original touches. One quirky thing is the salt and pepper mills; they are reconfigured wine bottles. We had seen some of the food earlier in the afternoon when we were enjoying the gardens out back; while we were enjoying drinks in the sun other guests were trying some of the food and it all looked good.

We had a lovely table at the front of the restaurant at the window. The service started out excellent and faltered as the evening went on; I think our waitress went on a long break and it took ages to get coffees. The one thing that never wavered was the quality of the food; it was consistently delicious! My two aunts had the 8 oz fillet steak which was done to perfection and served with chips and grilled tomato, my uncle had the beer-battered cod with chips, mushy peas and salad garnish which he’d eyed earlier in the afternoon, and I had the roast lamb served with samphire and quinoa. We stuck to two courses so we could have dessert. The three ladies had the lemon tart with rhubarb and vodka sorbet and biscotti; my uncle had an assortment of sorbet – cherry, lychee and mango. When we did manage to get our coffees (Americanos for my aunts, an Irish coffee for my uncle and a latte for me) they were only just warm.

The menu changes with the season and is sourced locally. The lamb that I enjoyed in May is not on the current menu. Nor are any of the desserts we had. Having said that, I would have a difficult time choosing from the current dessert menu because it is all tempting!
