We booked for one night in December at this hotel as a stopover for a long journey to Southampton. I was not expecting luxury as it was a very reasonable cost but would give us plenty of time next day to continue our trip.
However, when we arrived (in the rain) I was delighted by the location in a lovely town with wide road and a market spread up the centre. We quickly checked in and were directed to some parking a little further away until the market packed up and we were then able to move the car and park overnight directly opposite the hotel for a small fee.
The Green Dragon itself is a very old traditional pub with accommodation and in an old historic building. “Dickensian” look bars, and upstairs the rooms had quirky small stairs and sloping floors and furnished with vintage furnishings. We loved the look but the mattresses and bedding were thoroughly modern and clean and very comfortable. The shower room was stocked with lovely toiletries and tray with tea/coffee and biscuits – most welcome after our long drive.
Next morning breakfast was served in a small cosy room behind the bar and again furnished in typical old pub style with a huge old map featuring on one wall which was interesting to gaze at whilst we waited for our choice to be freshly cooked. Good menu, plenty of cereals, juice, toast etc. and good variety of hot dishes.
Checkout was very convenient at a later time and enabled us to take a quick walk up the High Street before leaving. Would have been happy to have stayed on a couple more days in this friendly comfortable pub and lovely town. Quite a little gem.
