Reasons for trip

A few weeks ago I spent a weekend in Niagara Falls celebrating a double birthday celebration. We stayed at the “Four Points by Sheraton Niagara Falls Fallsview”:https://www.silvertraveladvisor.com/review/179500 and went to “Flour Mill Restaurant”:http://oldstoneinnhotel.com/flour-mill-restaurant in the Old Stone Inn for the birthday dinner on the Saturday night. The restaurant is in a boutique hotel a few blocks east of our hotel. Even though it was towards the end of November, the weather was nice enough to walk over. There was no snow yet and with coats and gloves, it was a nice stroll. If you drive, there is a parking lot for the hotel/restaurant.

There was a private event happening in the dining room so our reservation was in the lounge which was very nice. It is next door to the dining room so we benefited from the entertainment at the party; a very good singer. Our waiter was very attentive and helpful. We had a “Groupon”:http://www.Groupon.com for the meal so ordered from the set four course menu. With the Groupon the four-course meal for the four of us was $174 – about half what it would be without the Groupon. The food was delicious and wherever possible, from the local Niagara region. We also had a couple of bottles of champagne to add to the celebration.

For the first course we had a choice of salad or soup. One chose the leek and potato soup and the rest of us had the salad which was fairly substantial and consisted of mixed greens, blackberries, apples, pumpkin seeds, candied pecans and a blackberry and apple vinaigrette.

For the second course we had a choice of mussels or poutine. One of the birthday girls had the poutine – a Canadian dish from Quebec of chips, gravy and cheese curds. Two of us had the Prince Edward Island mussels with Chorizo sausage in a tomato sauce. Our waiter had the kitchen make a second course for one of the birthday girls as she is a vegetarian and nothing on the menu fit the bill. She was delighted with cheese stuffed zucchini blossoms.

For the third course we had a choice of a 12 oz New York Strip steak, chicken, pasta or fish. Two of us chose the steak with duck fat roasted fingerling potatoes, green beans, beats and a red wine jus. The steak was perfectly done. We amazed ourselves by eating it all. One had baked salmon and one had orecchiette pasta (little ears) with fresh rappini, roasted garlic and fresh Burrata Mozzarella.

For the fourth course our waiter brought us one of each of the four desserts on offer: white chocolate raspberry truffles; chocolate cake with white frosting; Banana’s Foster crème caramel; and a peach cheese cake. We all tried them all and I think the cake was the favourite with the truffles a close second.

To round the meal off, our waiter brought us all a cup of mulled wine. My friend had been to this restaurant a few times before with her husband and I can certainly see why they keep going back!
