Driving along narrow lanes near the Surrey Hills, The Cock Inn at Headley comes into view. There is a good-sized car park and plenty of outdoor seating, but although it was a lovely summer day, we chose to have our meal inside. It is a charming, character country pub and garden serving excellent food locally sourced – gluten-free options – from an extensive menu and drinks list. We were tempted on what was on offer but decided to have our favourite, a beef roast with all the trimmings. It was quite substantial, and we didn’t think we could manage a dessert, but our knowledgable waiter, David, had other ideas. He had already guided us through the drinks menu, and we enjoyed two lovely cocktails but as it was some three weeks ago, I can’t now recall the names! Anyway, we completed our meal with a delicious dessert of scoops of ice cream with espresso coffee poured over. This pub is very popular and booking is advised, particularly over the weekend. Telephone No. 01372 377258. It’s about eight miles from Epsom and there are National Trust walks nearby. Highly recommend.
