Whilst staying for two nights at “The Swan”:https://www.silvertraveladvisor.com/review/accommodation/210725 in Lavenham, Suffolk, we wanted to eat out on our first night and having checked out a few menus online, we chose “The Cockhorse Inn”:https://www.thecockhorse.com/, a five-minute walk away.

On arrival, we walked through what is really the locals bar which had a relatively modern feel to it with high tables and ‘tractor seat’ stools. Next was a more formal lounge area with squashy sofas and interesting object d’art and then it was into the restaurant.

We were originally shown to a table next to what we quickly realised was a loud group of six men, and so we asked to be moved to a quieter table (I’d actually requested this when making the online booking).

A young girl took our order and we started off with two reasonably priced glasses of prosecco and decided to share a starter of chickpea and coriander blinis. We waited quite a while which didn’t matter as we weren’t in a rush, but then out of the blue, our main courses were brought to the table. We explained that we’d not yet had our starter and the plates were returned to the kitchen. However, having seen the size of the mains and not wanting to spoil them, we decided to forgo the starter. The waitress apologised and said she would take our bottle of South African Bird Island Sauvignon Blanc off the bill. As this was £19.99 it was a very generous offer, and so when we paid, we left a decent tip as service was not automatically included.

My partner ordered what he hoped was a lighter option of spiced salmon and pollock fish cake which came on top of a roasted pepper and tomato cream with a vegetable medley. The fish cake was huge and as there was a similarly generous portion of ribbon vegetables, he really didn’t need the side of slaw he ordered. My black treacle cured pork loin was two huge tender steaks sat on colcannon mash and served with a roasted butternut squash and cider gravy. Sadly we didn’t feel we did full justice to either of them.

There was definitely no room for either pudding or a coffee and I was disappointed not to be able to enjoy the cheeseboard with four locally sourced cheeses.

Towards the end of our meal, we spotted a couple had moved into the lounge area with their coffee and it was obviously a birthday as the lady was presented with a glass of fizz and something sweet on a plate. We heard her protestations about being too full to eat anymore and knew exactly how she felt.

On our way out, we chatted to the guy behind the bar, and he told us that when creating the restaurant area, they had deliberately kept a separate area where the locals could go and enjoy a pint.
