Until July 7 there is an exhibit at “The Atkinson”:https://www.theatkinson.co.uk/events/viking-rediscover-legend/ in Southport called Vikings: Rediscover the Legend. Admission is only £5 for adults. Although you can book tickets on line, my aunt and I went one day in May and had no difficulty getting tickets in the lobby. This is a good exhibit about the history of the Vikings in Britain from the 700s. It shows the lingering effects of their language, place names (even Birkdale), jewelry designs and fabric patterns. The Viking kings converted to Christianity so they’d have more power as ordained rulers by God though still kept some of their gods on coins etc. The exhibit is a joint effort of the British Museum and the Yorkshire Museum. It includes many artifacts that have been discovered in the northwest, many of which have never been seen before. It includes items from the Vale of York Viking Hoard, Cuerdale Hoard and the Bedale Hoard. The exhibit focuses on the daily life of the Vikings rather than their military conquests.
If you miss it in Southport the next stop for this exhibit is Norwich Castle Museum where it will be until September 2018.
