Having seen the comedy play twice in London, I was really excited to see it here in Wales with a Welsh production group. They produced a really interesting Programme too (see photo) but, we were both very disappointed.
It has a great underlying plot and structure, especially the need for some imaginative approaches to suggest a chase across the top of train carriages or the highlands of Scotland! The flapping coats, skirts and pigtails to suggest the strong Scottish wind blowing worked really well. However, it was too silly in places and actors overworked the comedy bits. If they had played it straight, it would have been more effective to get the laughs. After all, a lady falling across his lap with a knife in her back has its own comedic impact. We left at the interval as we decided we didn’t actually care what happened to the characters!
