If, like us, you have already ‘done’ Rome, or if you just don’t fancy the crowds, take the local orange bus from the bus station at Civitavecchia out to the ruins of the Roman Baths. The bus leaves at about 10.30 and there is a return bus about 3 hours later. Buy the return ticket from the kiosk before joining the bus. For a few Euros, the bus takes a countryside route to possibly the best kept secret in Italy. Entrance is mornings only and a few Euros. Wonderful views across the Mediterranean seas. Well maintained (English Language) boards and plenty of time to explore. Take a picnic and just enjoy the local wildlife.
A great place to let the children play freely and safely. The ground is uneven in places but my trusty walking stick kept even this silver traveller upright!
The staff are warm and welcoming, the bus drivers helpful and the locals friendly and charming. So much nicer than an overpriced cruise excursion and jostling tourists.
