Reasons for trip

From the outside, “Teras”:https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurant_Review-g186338-d4754532-Reviews-Teras_Turkish_BBQ_Restaurant-London_England.html on Wood Street in Walthamstow looks just like a kebab shop with the elephant’s leg in the window but I’d read positive reviews about its Turkish cuisine on Walthamstow’s Food and Drink Facebook pages.

Our historical society were holding a free walk down Wood Street and so we called in for lunch after learning about the street’s history – for example it was where the wealthy Londoners came for the weekend as it was on the edge of Epping Forest.

There are around twenty tables with many taken by a large group of 15+ who we noticed were from the local council and having a leaving lunch for someone. Fortunately, they’d ordered before us and were now getting served, so no long wait.

The menu had a good selection of both hot and cold meze’s and as we were struggling to choose mains, we opted for a mixed cold meze at £10 to nibble on. Although it suggested sharing between two, there was plenty for the three of us and the dish included: spinach tarator, carrot tarator, hummus, aubergine napolitana, kisir, and cacik. Some were familiar and lots were yoghurt based but were absolutely delicious served with warm pitta bread.

The mains were divided into charcoal grills, Teras classics, Mediterranean classics, wraps and vegetarian dishes and priced between £7.50 and £11.50. After much deliberation, we chose a lamb casserole, lamb shish and chicken shish with yoghurt (the last dish was mine which the waiter highly recommended). All came with a side of mixed rice and a huge salad to share. Whilst the plates were pretty big, the food was so good we persevered until we’d finished it all and in the process managed a couple of bottles of Turkish Ephesus wine at £14.10 each.

The service was good and it’s definitely a place we’ll return to.
