Reasons for trip

We have just returned from a cruise on the Marco Polo to St. Petersburg. At the end of the cruise I was asked to fill in a customer satisfaction survey. One of the questions was which was your favourite port of call. I had no hesitation in answering Tallinn.

Tallinn, the small capital of Estonia is a former Hanseatic port situated on the Baltic sea. It is only fifty miles from Helsinki yet it looks very different. The old town had thick walls and a moat. There is a medieval stone castle and a large pedestrianised shopping area with narrow cobbled streets. The 19th century Russian Orthodox cathedral is breath taking and free to visit. As a retired nurse I was fascinated by the oldest pharmacy which has been in business since the 15th century and has a small museum with ancient potions and remedies.

They use the Euro and English is widely spoken. Estonian is similar only to Finnish. Local specialities include Amber and marzipan. IN November and December a Christmas market is held in the main square with fifty stalls grouped around a large Christmas tree.
