If, like us, you are regular visitors to Helensburgh or to that corner of Scotland, you may have noticed over the last 12 months or so that the town has been undergoing something of a facelift. In particular, there are several new coffee shops and restaurants, of which the Sugar Boat is one.
It’s situated in the corner of Colquhoun Square, where you can sit outside and admire the improvements to the square, and generally watch the world go by. We wanted to try it for coffee, as we’d never been before, and ended up wishing we had planned to eat there, as the brunch and dinner menus looked very appetizing! However, a nice cup of coffee it was, but I managed to squeeze in a local delicacy called Ecclefechan Tart, an open pie with filling that reminded me of Christmas pudding! You have to try these things…… Curiously, they have there what they call their ‘wine shop’ which seems to have an excellent range to choose from, and promises of advice from their ‘sommelier’ on wines to choose either for your meal or for other occasions at home.
The only drawback from our point of view was the service. It seemed that, having opened very recently, much staff training was still going on, and especially with young-ish waiters/waitresses who were probably doing their Saturday job! Any kind of cutlery with which to eat my Ecclefechan Tart would have been helpful!
Otherwise, very good, and we shall certainly try it for a meal on our next visit to Scotland.
