Reasons for trip

We’d spent the afternoon and part of the evening exploring York. We’d had a late lunch, but now just before 9pm we were looking for a filling, but simple meal. We were walking along the Stonegate area of York, an area known for its good places to eat, when we came across The Stonegate Yard Bar and Brassiere tucked away on Little Stonegate.

The Stonegate Yard Bar and Brassiere is housed in a rather beautiful Georgian Townhouse. It has an upstairs restaurant, a ground floor bar/dining area {(which when we glanced in looked busy) but what caught our eye was the stunning courtyard dining area and it was here outside in the courtyard we took our seat.

The courtyard which is lined with plants and very ambiently lit, is also sheltered and has the addition of outside heaters. We found this a very relaxing place to sit, it was peaceful and hard to imagine the main city streets were just footsteps away. The warmth of the heaters, and the fact it was a warm Spring evening added to this pleasing environment.

We were greeted by a friendly waiter who gave us a menu. The menu was quite varied, it was just what we wanted, good, simple home-cooked food.. The Steak and Ale pie with vegetables was recommended so this was what we selected.

Our meal arrived and what a pie it was!! Tender, slow cooked beef which was so tasty, encased in a light short crust pastry which was just great for absorbing the rich gravy accompanied by home cooked chips and peas. A simple meal but it was cooked with care and expertise and what a positive difference this made. As for drinks, although we sampled a locally brewed beer, there was an excellent wine list. Our meal cost £8.95 each which we thought represented excellent value for money.

I would recommend this restaurant to others, for its good quality food. Its ground floor bar dining area and its courtyard make it a good place for the less mobile to enjoy a meal.

The Stonegate area of York is a mixture of medieval and Georgian Buildings which house fine shops and restaurants. It is in the centre of York and close to all of the attractions this fascinating city has to offer.
