This is meant in a positive way as the hotel understands the importance of looking after its guests and making their stay enjoyable.

The hotel is a large mid C19th stone building that was originally an orphanage, but is now a 4* hotel set in its own grounds with a swimming pool.

It has a large entrance hall with reception, comfortable lounge to one side and a large bar area to the other.

It is an excellent position within a few minutes walk of Kendal and, although on the main road, is quiet.

I had a huge corner room at the back of the hotel with a king size bed. The mattress and pillows were comfortable with a lightweight duvet. The room was very clean and functional – no frills in fact, with no pictures and basic but adequate furniture. Along with the ‘hospitality tray’ with hot chocolate and biscuits, it also had hair drier, ironing board and iron and, best of all, a big and very quiet fan. As temperatures were in the mid 20˚s even at night, this was much needed.

The bath room was very modern with an excellent over the bath shower, plenty of toiletries and a big bath towels. With covid restrictions, the room wasn’t serviced during our stay, unless specifically asked.

Dinner and breakfast times had to be booked in advance with reception. Breakfast could get busy if there were a lot of people wanting it at the same time. Service could also be a bit slow if busy.

I was part of a group tour and we had two meals together as a group in the Romney Room, their main dining room. The other two nights, I had bought into the extra dining option rather than going out to eat elsewhere. Those meals, along with breakfast, were eaten in the bar.

Menus were possibly a bit uninspiring – starter and deserts were more interesting than the mains. Portion sizes were generous – very generous and a starter would have done me as a main course. The local roast lamb is not to be missed.

The full Cumbrian breakfast set me up for the day and I didn’t need any lunch!

Staff were attentive, helpful and always had a smile. Nothing seemed to phase them. I enjoyed my stay.

For anyone with mobility problems, there are no ground floor bedrooms and only a small lift.
