We had a two night stay at this country house hotel set in beautiful countryside not far from Bath. On arrival we were shown around the ground floor which had a variety of rooms to sit in and drink, read magazines or generally relax. We were then taken up two flights of stairs to our room – pleasant with a comfortable four poster bed but not particularly large (we had the basic room; it was an extra £50 a night to upgrade). All was very clean and checked regularly with good quality toiletries in the bathroom. In addition there was free internet access.
After unpacking we went downstairs for a cream tea in the library, which we had to ourselves. There were a variety of “proper” leaf teas and plenty of jam and cream for our scones. The manager came to check everything was OK which was a nice touch. Later in the evening we went outside to sit and look at the view whilst we had a drink – no bar but drinks are brought to you wherever you wish to sit. Service was rather slow but I think this was because there was a wedding party in residence. Service was excellent the next night.
There is a variety of meal options but we had dinner from the short à la carte menu which was delicious, though basically the same each night. I found it about the right amount for a hot summer evening but my husband felt the main courses, although beautifully presented, could have been larger or had more vegetables. Breakfast, however, was a different matter – as much as you liked and freshly cooked to order. I can thoroughly recommend the poached haddock.
Overall a very enjoyable stay though relatively expensive.
