Everyone knows that New Zealand has 2 large islands – right ? Well no, actually it has three! The little known Stewart Island is an hour's exciting boatride from the southernmost town of Bluff. We set off on a beautiful day for the Islands only town Oban, where we had a few nights at the superbly located Rose Cottage (Self Catering). Although Oban is a pretty little town we needed some action so flew across the island by tiny plane to Masons Bay where we spent a few days in a clean & well equipped D.O.C (Dept. of Conservation) hut. The wildlife was amazing and we actually saw Kiwis – in the daytime (which is pretty incredible because they are supposed to be nocturnal), It took us most of the day to walk, in a fairly leisurely way, along easy well maintained paths to Freshwater Bay where we took a water taxi back to Oban for a warm shower and a night out on the town – well, a good meal at the islands only pub. If like us you are travelling to the deep south of New Zealand this is something almost too good to miss.
