This is a rarity in New York, something for nothing! Rather than pay through the nose for a tourist tour boat to the statue of Liberty (Liberty Island is currently closed due to the hurricane damage) why not hop onto the Staten Island ferry for a free ride across the river taking in excellent views of Liberty Island en route, the best photographs are on the way out from Manhatten so makesure you get the Starboard side upperdeck position as soon as you get on! (Thats the right hand side of the ship to you landlubbers) On the way back choose the front as you get the whole of Manhatten and some fantastic views, particularly at night. The ferries are large and capacious, suitable for passengers lacking in mobility but be warned, there is an initial rush to get the prime viewing spots, we travelled on Sunday morning and the ferry was pretty much empty, when we travelled back later on, they were heaving. Good facilities at the terminals (nothing on the ferry though apart from toilets) and a 25 minute ride across to a lovely Island, well worth the time.
