If you, like me, are blown away by medieval carvings, you will love the animals and mythical beasts carved on the pews at St Mary’s. It’s a treasure hunt for children and adults alike! Play “Hunt the Sciapod’…a carving of a man lying down and sheltering under the umbrella of his enormous single foot! Also worth seeing is a carving of a giraffe, it’s long neck sinuous supported on its back….some medieval craftsman clearly knew it had a long neck but had never seen one! Lions of course…but you will also find a pelican…a tortoise…and a mermaid! A marvellous place to take the grandkids to!
