Reasons for trip

St. Dogmaels is a large village on the estuary of the Teifi River on the opposite side to Cardigan town and therefore still in Pembrokeshire. The village is on the hillside and there is a wonderful old ruined Abbey to visit with lots of useful information and at the bottom of the abbey is the old coach house which has been turned in to a small museum, gallery and restaurant. The food is great, and the location on the sunny day that we visited was charming. The garden seating overlooked the Abbey and the outside seating on the other side overlooked a lovely millpond with ducks. There is a small market held there on a Thursday morning selling local produce and the old Mill still makes flour and bread.

Having spent a pleasant morning and had lunch here we then progressed to the mouth of the estuary where there is a fantastic sandy beach backed by sand-dunes known as “Poppit Sands”. Car parking is £5 for the day or £3 for half day and there is a board walk across the dunes to the sands. Dogs are allowed on one side and is dog free on the other. When the tide is out there are lots of rock pools for children to potter in and the RNLI have a shop and provide lifeguards on the beach. Well worth a visit especially with children.
