Reasons for trip

Llangian is an attractive small villages of grey stone houses on a tributary of the Afon Soch at the end of the Llyn Peninsula.

The church is set above the village in what was originally a circular grave yard, indicating a pre Christian site. It is a simple single aisled building with a small bellcote at the west end and a wooden porch in front of the west door. On the north side is a small vestry.

A church was founded here in the C6th by St Peris and his follower St Cian. Buried deposits in the church yard have been dated to 550AD. Near the south wall of the church, by the ivy covered grave of Henry Griffith, is a C6th inscribed stone grave marker. This is thought to be still in its original position. The Latin inscription on the stone reads ‘MELI MEDICI FILI MARTINI IACIT’, which translates as ‘Melus the Doctor, son of Martin, lies here’. This is unusual as it is the only example of a profession being mentioned in Britain. The top of the stone has been flattened at some time to be used as a sundial. Now there is a small sundial on the south wall of the church.

The present church dates from the C13th But was extended in the C15th when the chancel was added. The roof dates from then. The porch and vestry were added in the C19th. Above the porch, set in the wall is a stone cross made of different coloured stones.

Inside it is a simple church with whitewashed walls with modern wall hangings and dark wooden beamed ceiling. The pews are C19th and have carved poppy heads. The simple stone font at the back of the church is dated 1638.

A C19th carved rood screen with a crucifix above separates the nave and chancel. There are two funeral hatchments suspended from the chancel roof and memorial stones on the walls. One of the wooden beams across the nave has carving underneath an rests on carved corbels with an angel.

The church was a stop on the pilgrim route to Bardsey Island. It is open daily and is lovingly cared for by the village. There is no dedicated parking for the church so we parked on the road out of the village above the church. The nearest post code for the church is LL53 7LW. The grid reference is SH297290.
