We have just returned from a 7 night trip to Crete. Wonderful weather, food and attractions are available at the resort town of Agios Nicholaos.
My mother (66), young son (3) and I (40) looked at the various boat trips on offer and chose the barbeque and beach Spinalonga Boat trip departing from Agios Nicholaos main harbour. There are a couple of different versions of this trip available. But with the beach stop everyone can get off the boat and take a lovely swim in a neighbouring bay, white sands and shallow enough and sheltered for my young son.
After the swim the guests are invited back on the boat for a barbeque, lamb chops, tomato and cucumber salad and feta, complimentary drink, bread and cheese. The food was good and the service and military precision on how it was organised was great.
Bar and toilet facilities on the boat are fine.
The views of Spinalonga as the boat explores the outside of the island is spectacular. On arrival you are directed to your tour guide (if you want one) who are wonderfully enthusiastic about the history of the island. Guests can then walk and explore the island on their own. What a fascinating place.
Back on the boat and 45 mins or so back to the main port. The cost of the trip was 25 euros each and my son was free (as was his food).
Worth every penny to take this trip to the ancient Venetian island and latter the leper colony.
If visiting Agios Nicholaos or in Crete in general – well worth the history lesson and beautiful surroundings.
