Reasons for trip

We arrived by train from Naples airport late evening, then taxi to ‘Sorrento Experience’ – our B&B accommodation and, after a long day travelling, settled for a delivered pizza (organised by our host) and a relatively early night.

With only two full days here we intended to stick to Sorrento – leaving Pompei, Capri and Amalfi coast for some future visit.

Awoke to heavy rain showers until mid-morning, then set of on a 10-minute walk to the Piaza Tasso on Corzo Italia – passing by the ruins of the old mills (you can see them clearly from the road above, but not accessible that we could see).

Enjoyed this first walk around town, particularly the viewpoint on the Villa Comunale terrace, beside S. Francesco cloister/church, and the narrow streets adjacent to Corso Italia – with their craft workshops, and the variety of lemon-based products (there’s more to lemon than Limoncello!) among other offerings.

There’s a local tradition of working with wood that now offers everything from simple wooden toys, thru wood-framed sun glasses, to the most elaborate wood-inlaid furniture. The Inlaid Wood Museum was closed during our visit – but there were plenty of places to see the contemporary offerings (including furniture that was way too big and elaborate for our humble abode!).

During our short stay we also visited the Cathedral; the Correale Museum with its gardens and viewpoint; the Sedil Dominova (originally a meeting place for the nobility – now a workers club ‘by kind permission of the comune of Sorrento’) – and boosted the local economy by visiting quite a few shops.

Looked down on Marina Grande from above – but didn’t sample the restaurants down there (though might do on another visit, when it’s warmer and we can enjoy an al-fresco meal!).

Overall this was a short, relaxing holiday to celebrate our 49th wedding anniversary – and much enjoyed too.

Will happily visit Sorrento again – at a time of year when we can fly direct from Glasgow (as opposed to the 6-day camel hike with overnights in Glasgow and Gatwick airports we had to endure for this visit!)
