Reasons for trip

This week I had a guided walking tour of Somerton led by one of the volunteers in the local museum. it was prearranged as I was part of a group travelling from my home town.

It was fascinating. Somerton is an historic town once owned by Saxon kings. Later a Roman centre and then became the capital of Wessex.

In the 13th century it became the capital of Somerset. We visited the market place, the butter cross and the beautiful 13th century church. The Church has the most intricately carved wooden ceiling. Fortunately there is a mirror there to view it at length. We also saw the almshouses.

I found it a quiet, harmonious town with buildings sympathetically built. If you are in the area I would recommend a visit.

Worrying there are plans to build 400 houses there. I am aware that we have a housing crisis but I hope that the nature of the town is kept.
