Our outward flight was 8.30am and we were due back into Gatwick at 23.30. We decided to look big and pay to stop at the Sofitel which is in the North Terminal and a few minutes walk under cover to the check in desks.
It is a stylish modern building with 5 storeys of rooms built round a central atrium. Odd numbers overlook the atrium; even numbers outside. On our return trip we had a room overlooking the bus station. Double glazing is very effective so there is no noise from outside.
Check in was quick and reception staff were pleasant and helpful. We were asked if we wanted help with our bags, in which case a porter arrived with a trolley to take them to your room.
Rooms are large with plenty of space. The bed was large and although a trifle soft for me was extremely comfortable with very puffy pillows and crisp white sheets. The air conditioning was effective and the room stayed a nice temperature. The bathroom was well supplied with towels and toiletries.
We booked a special deal for a room with breakfast. A continental breakfast is served from 5am and full breakfast from 6am. It isn’t cheap but was good and there was plenty of choice. There was a good selection of fresh fruit and fruit salads with yogurt. There was the usual selection of cereals. The continental breakfast had cheese and cold meats as well as croissants, toast etc. The cooked breakfast was a buffet with bacon, sausage, fried or scrambled eggs, tomatoes, baked beans, mushroom, hash browns and fried bread. Porridge and kippers were available to order. Used plates were cleared quickly and waiting staff were pleasant. The only criticism was that tea was served from a tea pot by the waiting staff and there were no offers of refils. It certainly kept me going.
We were also able to leave a bag with a change of clean clothes in the hotel for our return.
It was a comfortable and convenient place to stay, especially with an early flight or late return. It worked extremely well for us and we would recommend it.
