Reasons for trip

Society Café opened last fall in an older neighbourhood just to the west of downtown in London, Ontario. It’s a great spot to drop in on if you’re out for a walk along the river. It is on a one way street into downtown over the Blackfriars Bridge. When I first moved to London a few years ago my vehicle’s GPS kept trying to take me over the bridge into downtown but the bridge was closed for repairs. Now it’s open again and looks lovely.

I’ve been to the café a few times for lattes and to try some of the home baked goodies, especially the flapjack. The owner has ties to Bath, England and tries to throw in some English baking along with the typical North American muffins and cookies.

Unfortunately a month after they opened a drunk driver side-swiped the building and ended up inside the house across the road! This is a heritage building so the owner wasn’t sure if he’d be able to get it up and running again but managed to do so at the beginning of March. Yep, just in time for the pandemic. A local artist, Kevin Bice, gave them a painting of the Blackfriars Bridge to adorn the wall in the newly renovated café. The owner kept things going on a take-out basis for a little while and I stopped in to pick up a latte and flapjack and checked out the painting. Sadly since then he has had to close up shop until things get back to normal.

Normal hours are 8-4:30 during the week, 9-3:00 on Saturday and closed on Sunday.
