Let’s face it – this is the only place to get something to eat on top of Snaefell, so it has a captive audience. It also knows how to charge too!
It was mid morning and service was excruciatingly slow, even though no tram had arrived and there wasn’t much of a queue. Staff were not particularly good either. The cake selection was uninspiring with a choice of chocolate or carrot cake, scones, caramel shortbread and prepacked flapjack type biscuits.
The person in front of me asked the lass serving what something in a flan dish was. She didn’t know and went to ask someone else. They looked long and hard at it and decided it was apple pie – it was an EGG CUSTARD!!!
There was a basic selection of sandwiches and they also do soup, salads, burgers and jacket potatoes.
My piece of chocolate cake was small with little flavour. At £2.95 it was expensive compared with other cafes I’d used on my travels around the island. The scones seemed to be popular with most people. Again at £2.65 for an average size scone and butter, this isn’t cheap. If you want jam then it is £3.40.
I appreciate everything has to be brought up to the cafe and there is a cost to this. Even so I felt the cafe was basic and not particularly good. The toilets were basic too…Visitors deserve better than this.
