Reasons for trip

This trip was organised excursion booked via Holland America Line. An air-conditioned coach takes you with your guide from the port of Puntarenas, Costa Rica, about 45 mins to the high point where your walk begins. The guide gives you plenty of useful information about Costa Rica and the area we are in during the journey. The walk is mainly downhill and lasts about one and a half hours consisting of paths, steps and trails that can be muddy and slippery at times but was mainly dry during our walk. The walk normally includes crossing 5 cable bridges but due to a recent landslide we only managed to cross 3 and had to abandon the final stages of the walk. The bridges are around 20 meters high and 90 feet long, so although they did move around a bit they were pretty stable. Having said that they were also grilled below your feet so you could see down and that was enough to trouble a few people in our party. The forest was magnificent for the trees, vines and industrious leaf cutter ants that seemed to be trailing along everywhere (watch your step) but lacked colour and features to make it a truly spectacular experience. We didn't see any of the animals or birds that the country boasts of, nor one of the 2000 species of orchids they claim to have. Nor were there features such as waterfalls to break up the flourishing sea of green. The walk ends at a hotel, that owns these trails, for some fruit and drinks (included) and there that have an iguana and some pretty flowers. An interesting insight into Costa Rica but not the best tour I've been on. Other people went on the river boat tour and seemed to see more of the local wildlife. Not an overly strenuous walk but you need to be reasonably mobile to be able to enjoy it.
